4 ~ Sunday, October 31, 1993 - North Shore News open NVC store-front operation THE WOMAN walking along the 200-block of Lonsdale Avenue stopped and looked at the sign in the window advertising the North Vancouver RCMP Community Policing Office. By Surj Rattan News Reporter An RCMP van marked with the words “community policing’’ was parked outside. The woman asked a police of- ficer standing by the office’s open front door what the office was. He said it was the home of the newly created RCMP community policing office. “T guess 1 won't be walking down this street anymore,’’ the woman laughed, before she walked away. But public avoidance of the police and the new store-front base is not what the police want, said North Vancouver RCMP Const. Rino LeClerc. He, and a small army of vol- unteers, will run the new office, located at 232 Lonsdale Ave. It is the first store-front police office in North Vancouver and is being funded by the RCMP in conjunction with North Vancouver City and the attorney general's ninistry. LeClere said the office is set up to service North Vancouver City resident concerns and, more im- portantly, bring the potice and the community closer together. Asked if the police chose the Lower Lonsdale ‘city south’’ location because of its high crime rate, LeClere said ‘tyes and no.” “It's basically to get to the el- derly community. There's a lot of elderly people living down here, and we want to get closer to them. “There's a lot of people renting down here and sometimes they can’t get out. 1 don't know if they’re afraid of getting out,” said LeClere, who has worked with the North Vancuuver RCMP’s detachment’s community policing section for the past year. The new community policing office is made up of an advisory board, which includes two senior citizens, the Lower Lonsdale Business Association, the North Vancouver Chamber of Com- merce, one youth, the North Shore Neighbourhood House and Queen Mary Community Services. LeClerc, who is in charge of the community policing office, is currently recruiting volunteers to work with him. He hopes to at- tract between 30 and $0 volun- teers. W. Van cuts funding to Presentation House WEST VANCOUVER District has withdrawn some of its financial support for the operation of Presentation House § in North Vancouver. West Vancouver District Coui- cil voted Oct. 18 to contribute $10,000 in 1993.to Presentation House, rather than the $13,975 requested or the $13,550 recom- mended by the North Shore Arts Commission. .Since West Vancouver’ first began contributing to Presentation House as a regional arts facility, the district has undertaken a con- siderable financial obligation to operate its own cultural facilities, Coun..Pat Boname pointed out. The municipality supports the Ferry. Building Gallery, the Silk Purse (home of the West Van- couver Community Arts Council) and Klee Wyck. West Vancouver is moving towards more extensive operation of the Gertrude Lawson House Museum and Archives. “To -send $10,000 over to Presentation House... is not serv- ing the best interests of our own artistic community,’’ Coun. Andy Danyliu said. Operationa! funding aside, West _ WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL by Maureen Curtis Vancouver also participates in special-project funding to support Presentation House’s¢ photographic gallery. ‘We can operate our own photographic gallery if we choose,’’:Coun. Danyliu said. Coun. Diana Hutchinson re- quested that the motion to allocate the $10,000 should include a council! decision to call for a thorough review of its financial commitments to the North Van- couver facility for 1994. Coun. Boname agreed. West Vancouver’s contribution to Presentation House dates back to 1989, when the area had fewer arts facilities of its own, At that time Presentation House was the only facility available for use by the West Vancouver Little Theatre. cS rams Tired of Jeans? @ Tilleys are welcomed where jeans fear to tread o Tilleys fast and last and fast ® Pickpocket-safe pocket @ Velcro ® No troning ® Fast dryi ng if it rains or when "Give ’em Hell!" She added that the RCMP bicyele and foot patrol units will aiso be based at the new office. “We're very happy it’s come about. The visibility of the police is what we really want. ft will in- crease the conimunity access to the police and we certainly need it in Lower Lonsdale,"’ said Dean.
