Petition protests land clearing

Armed with about 1,050
signatures on the petition, David
Wortmian- presented it to West
Vancouver District, Council on

Monday night and protested the
clearing of the property, south o
Brunswick Bowling Lanes and
on the west side of the area’s twin
movie theatres.

The petition is addressed to the
Squamish Nation Indian Band and
their lessees, Park Royal Shopping
Centre and its owners Larco Ji-
vestments Inc.

It asks that these parties consult
with the surrounding community
before proceeding with<any fur-
ther chiunges ihat would despoil
nature tn the Park Royal area.

Although West Vancouver
District has no jurisdiction over
the Squamish Band property,
Wortman called on council to
serve and protect the community's
needs through regular consultation
with the band and the lessees and
communication with residents.

Wortman said the residents

don’t know the whole
behind the tree cutting.

“t would be happy to review .
the history,’' said Mayor Mark
Sager, inviting Wortman to view
the volumes of information that
document the background of
discussions between the band and
the municipality.

Coun. Andy Danyliz. was criti-
cal of the trea-cutting incident but
said. uitention should be focused
on the future,

“Perhaps people could ap-
proach the Squamish Indians in a
sincere way....maybe we should
jearn from Clinton and have a
town. meeting with the Indian
people to discuss our future.”

Wortman said counci! should
take the lead in such talks and
represent the people’s concerns
that Ambleside Park may also be
lost and replaced with high-densi-
ty development.

bied the North Vancouver District
44 School Board (NVSB) Tuesday
night to allow NVPAC president,
Maria Roeck, to sit on the board
as a non-voting inember.

Walton pointed out that sitting at
the table with the trustees would
be no different from sitting any-
where else in the room, because
an ‘‘ex officio’? member could not
vote or attend in-camera
meetings.

The board expressed interest in
exploring the concept in an effort
to improve communication be-
tween the board and parents.

The Schoo! Act states that the
only people who can legally sit.on
school boards are those who are
elected at large or. sppointed by
the provincial Education Ministry.
