the V6 because it is smoother and
quieter than the four-cylinder
engine and costs about the same.

For those who want something
sportier, the two-door Achieva SC
is available with a high-output
“Quad 4"" engine with 175 horse-
power. This 1s a dual overhead-
cam unit with two valves per cyl-
inder.

The SC package also includes a
close-ration five-speed manual
transmission, low-profile 16 inch
radials and alloy wheels,
variable-effort power steering,
dual exhaust outlets, and rear
spoiler.

For a base price of $15,298, the
two-door S model is less expen-
sive than its import rivals and a
little pricier than domestics such
as the Dodge Spirit and Ford
Tempo.

door and is probably the best bu
in my opiaion.

Standard equipment on the
four-door S sedan includes ABS,
power stcering, five-speed manual
transmission, reclining bucket
seats with lumbar adjustment,
centre console, and power door
locks that lock automatically 16
seconds after the ignition key is
turned oa. Battery rundown pro-
tection is also standard equipment
this year.

For $15,398 ptus $525 freight
and PDI, the Achieva S four-door
sedan is hard to beat in the com-
pact segment.

Even fully equipped, V6-
powered Achieva SI. sedans come
in under $20,000.

If you want a compact, front-
wheel-drive domestic sedan that is
more import-orienied than other
General Motors products, the
Achieva is worth a test drive.
