Running at the Surrey Art Gallery, 137560 - 88th Ave., Surrey, B.C. Sept. 4 to Oct. 18. Ron Falcioni ART REVIEW @ NE OF the problems with surrealism - since 1945 has been the difficulty of determining - ‘its significance as a viable force in contemporary art. _ As.an art tnovement, it is gener- ‘ally considered to have been eclipsed long before the death in 1966 of its creator and mentor, Andre Breton. . In.a real sense the expropriation _of surrealism into the public do- main-defused its potency, leaving “only its exquisite corpse intact and - a host of halting male pallbearers adamantly denying that the dissemination of the spirit of sur- tealism ultimately necessitated its eventual entombment in the sepulchre of art history. Unfortunately this ambitious project is seriously marred by a number of unsettling incongtuities. Represented in this show is the art of four women, all of whom are actually working in Vancouver. At the Gala opening, only the work of Davida Kidd, Marie Ken- nedy and Lori-Ann Latremouille was on display to the public, the performance-art of Sheri-D being scheduled for this coming Sunday, Oct. 4. For the most part, these are works high on technica! sophistication but low on uniquely ’ personal vision. Davida Kidd’s deftly seamless photomontages are coldly sug- gestive of the slick computer- graphics currently utilized by the commercial art market They seem more coxitrived ex- plorations of mere technique than sincere attempts at introspection.
