committee

TWO NORTH Shore MLAs
are among the members of
a legislative all-party com-
mittee assigned to in-
vestigate issues concerning
the two referendum ques-
tions that were placed be-
fore B.C. voters on Oct. 17,
1991.

In the {991 provincial election,
more than 80% of B.C. voters
supported the idea of more direct

. democracy in provincial politics.

The Select Standing Committee
oa Parliamentary Reform, Ethical
Conduct,, Standing Orders and
Private Bills is examining how
recall and initiative mechanisms
can be implemented in B.C.

The group is also looking at the
potential impact such reforms
could have on the political pro-
cess.

North Vancouver-Lonsdale
MLA David Schreck. and West
Yancouver-Garibaldi MLA David
Mitchell are on the committee.

Following public hearings in the
coming fall and spring, the com-
mittee will produce a preliminary
Teport and make recommendatiors
to the legislature.

A final report is expected to be
released by the end of 1993.

On- Tuesday, Sept. 29, the
committee will meet in the Student
Union Building at the University
of British Columbia.
