30 - Friday, May 1, 1992 - North Shore News Big Three ready to introduce new models LAYOFFS, CUTBACKS, budget cuis. North America seems to be still struggling with the tough economic times. The U.S. automakers have been especially hit hard — each one of them recording major losses. Al- though the “Big Three’’ are plan- ning to delay or cut some future projects, many of their past pro- jects wili bear fruit this year in the form of all-new vehicles. ’'m go- ing to discuss some of the interest- ing North American cars that we will be seeing im the next twelve months. In the following two col- umns, Asia and Europe will be given a chance to boast their up- coming products. _ With the recent launch of the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler is getting ready for the battle. The larger, longer, roomier, and more powerful Grand Cherokee is expected to do very well against the highiy popu- far Ford Explorer. It boasts such features . as driver’s-side airbag (first in a sport utility vehicle), standard ABS, 190-horsepower six-cylinder engine, and a choice of three types of four-wheel drive systems. ‘Chrysler claims that the Grand Cherokee drives and rides like a OVERDRIVE passenger car — which makes perfect sense since the majority of the 4x4 buyers are city com- muters. Come this fall, an even more Significant vehicle platform will reach our showrooms — Chrysler’s LH cars. In Canada, these vehicles will be marketed as the Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler Intrepid (Dodge in U.S.), and Eagle Vision. Thanks to the cab- forward design, these mid-sized cars offer excellent interior packaging. Although each model differs slightly in style, they will all feature available 3.5-litre, 24- valve V-6, traction control, ABS, mutti-link suspension, and stand- ard driver’s and passenger-side airbags. A larger, more luxurious Chrysler New Yorker will follow the trio halfway through the ’93 model year. Pay attention, ‘‘Buy Canadian”’ believers, these cars will be built in Ontario. Other cars worth noting include the soon-to-be-released monstrous Dodge Viper, and the all-new Mitsubishi-based Dodge Colt and Eagle Summit which will arrive this fall. The Coit and Summit’s styling have some | resemblance to the LH’s cab- ferward design, meaning that they heva flowing designs with the “cabin”? portion pushed forward. Mitsubishi is already offering these models in Japan as Mirage models, with the world’s smallest V-6 engine (1.6 litres). Bob Eaton, who will take over from Lee Iacocca on January 1, 1993 as chairman, will certainly have his plate full of promising cars to go along with his new responsibility. What about Ford? They are certainly not going to sit around and wait. In the fall, the Dear- born-based automaker’s luxury division, Lincotn, will introduce a GM page 32 % ALL WORK LIMITED GUARANTEE (ig FOR 1 YEAR WITHOUT VOIDING fin MANUFACTURER'S WARRARTY. —&4 ORIGINAL PARTS OR BETTER.
