Wednesaay. September 18. 1997 - North Shore News - 9 HMCS Nincompoop in rough political seas BASHING THE Great Batoney has become the nation's chief sport. I cheer, you cheer, everyone cheers 2s his popularity rating hits the Polar icecap and folks hope he gets lost in the saow. Keep it up, Brian. As you said when conf-onted by irate peasants in Kelowna, this country has no shortage of nincompoops. How could it be otherwise when the ship in which we serve is HMCS Nincompoop? There was a time when she was HMCS Valiant. But thanks to vou and other captains of nincom- poopery like Pierre Trudeau those days are long gonc. We are ruled by freaks, frauds, wimmin and pansies. Not that your party is the soie offender. Ottawa is an indistinguishable mass. i was reminded of this when reading The Northern Voice, a newsletter put out by The Nor- thern Foundation, a group that speaks for the now not-so-silent majority. In an article headed **Brian Mulroney and the NDP — Are there any differences?’’ these points are made: “Both favor giving your tax dollars to radical feminist and homosexual groups. “Both oppose capital punish- ment in all cases — even for the worst criminals. “Both support reverse discrimination — (affirmative ac- tion) on the basis of race and sex. “Both want turbans in the RCMP and both will call you a racist if you think otherwise. “Both are eager to say “Yes” to all demands put forward by Doug Collins ON THE OTHER HAND Quebec. “Both support forced official bilingualism. “Both support unlimited, unrestricted immigration and are eager to extend Canadian citizen- ship to anyone claiming to be a refugee. “Both support government- promoted, government-funded multiculturalism, “Both suppoct unrestricted, un- limited abortion on demand ... and although Mulrongy is ‘‘per- sonally pro-life’ his actions speak louder than his words. “Both have unrelentingly bash- ed South Africa while turning at blind eve to the grave injustices in other African countries, not to mention socialist dictatorships throughout the world. “Both are opposed to an elected Senate.’’ It is true, states the writer, that the NDP disagrees with Mulroney’s foreign policy; it also disagreed with his support of the Gulf War and with his free trade agreement, his timid steps toward privatization and his efforts to reduce the size of government. To that I would add that you can’¢ tell what he’s going to do from one minute to the next. First he swears that old age pensions are sacrosanct, then he says they are not; he says that Air Canada is not for sale, then it is. That's because the word ‘‘prin- ciple’’ is not in this nincompoop s vocabulary. Which is why we have the GST. How about the Liberals? Jean Chretien was for and against Meech Lake and for and against the Gulf War, says the Northern Voice. (He is also in support of all the things listed above. The Lib- erals, in fact, were the ones who thought of them first, while the NDP acted as Greek chorus.) Whoever you vote for in the next federal election can't be any worse than the three parties who wear one suit, Which is why so many people are going to give the Reform Party a chance. Not even Pressed-upon Manning could be that bad. In the meantime, let’s hope that Brian's nincompoopery will reduce Atrium gallery displays glass sculpture ROBERT MACFARLANE'’S award-winning glass sculpture will be on display to the public until Sept. the Canada building. MacFarlane owns The Glass House in North Vancouver. 27 in the atrium of HongKong Bank of His work, an untitled sculpture comprised of three horizontal bands of grey, red and trans- parent, was one of two pieces chosen to receive the B.C. Arts Association's jurors’ award. His work and 13 others form the HongKong bank exhibit, Glass As Art Il. “[ had co expectation of getting accepted because these shows are heavily Juried,"* said MacFarlane. “But out of 90 first-rate pieces, the jurors chose this small, Zen-like win- dow. They just felt it had that subtle essence of what good art is.’” 19 SMILES $12:99 ‘CLIP THIS AD AND SAVE! te 18x10" © 2—5x7’s ° 16 Wallets (2x1)* | Circle your calendar now for advertised date(s)! | 19 Portraits Only $6.99!
