New models: sporty and practical From page 28 price, the four-door Vigor has a five cylinder engine with 176 horsepower, Ik will likely be priced between twenty-five and thirty thousand dollars. Higher up on the performance ladder is the new Subaru SVX, a sophisticated two-door perfor- mance coupe with all-wheel drive and a 230 horsepower horizon- tally-opposed 3.3 litre V6. The most controversial aspect of the SVX’s styling is the side ‘‘window within a window," otherwise the SVX is a smooth, contemporary design that will probably win more acclaim for its technical merits rather than its styling. The SVX will become the flagship ef Subaru’s fleet and is expected to be available in August. Back in North America, Saturn automobiles, Genera! Motor’s new economy car division, will in- troduce a sporty two-door coupe this fall. The four-seater, front- wheel-drive Saturn sports coupe is equipped with a 123 horsepower, 1.9 litre aluminum alloy four cyl- inder engine. The engine has State-of-the-art technology, in- cliding dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and multi-port fuel injection. Other redesigned sports and performance cars scheduled to ar- rive in the next year include the new BMW 3-series sedan, a V6- powered Volkswagen Corrado, a completely new Mazda RX-7, a new Honda CRX, and some time in 1992, a two-seater Mercedes- Benz sports car based on the 190 series platform. A comnion theme among mary of these new sporty cars, especial- ly the lower-priced ones, is a clev- er combination of sportiness and practicality. Sporty cars are no longer cramped, hard-riding skateboards with very little storage space. Many are now offering good fuel economy, power, com- fort, room for four or five pas- sengers, and sufficient cargo space. Perhaps this is why, even during a recession, consumers are buying sporty cars. The new generation of sports and performance cars are simply a lot more practical than they used to be. Air bags now in all Corsicas From page 27 veniently located on either side of the semi-circular fastrument sur- tound. A basic set of white-on- tlack, analogue instruments, con- sisting of speedometer, water temperature and fuel gauge, are clearly visible ahead of the driver. An AM/FM stereo radio with four speakers is standard equip- ment and both stereo and heat- er/ventilation controls are located in the center console area. Rear seat heater ducts are also new this year. Velour-covered front bucket seats and a rear bench (with sepa- rate fold-forward rear seats for trunk access) are scotchguarded at the factory for extra spill protec- tion. | found the reclining front seats to be very comfortable and supportive, but the rear seat was somewhat stiff. Storage space is quite generous, consisting of map pockets, centre bin, and glovebox. A slide-out two-cup holder on the passenger side is a new feature. One item missing from the standard equip- ment list is intermittent wiper con- trol, a necessity in Raincouver. An important new safety feature on the ‘91 Corsica is an air bag on the driver's side. Designed to inflate in milliseconds in a severe frontal collision and provide a protective cushion, the air bag is now standard equipment on all Corsicas. oat x i ONLY AT DICK IRWIN - COMPARE OUR PRICES! 91 SPRINT 2 DOOR season tires, Excellent Selection.
