8 — Sunday. February 17, 1991 - North Shore News War puts a dent in NV school trip plans PERSIAN GULF War jit- ters have caused five North Vancouver secondary schaols to cancel or postpone field trips to Europe and Japan that had been planned for the com- ing summer and fall. By Patrick Raynard Contributing Writer But all parties remain optimistic that hostilities in the Middle East will be over in time to allow the students to make those trips be- fore they graduate from high school. Assistant schools superintendent Chris Kelly told the North Van- couver District 44 School Board on Tuesday night that all the travel agents and airlines concern- ed have made a ‘‘good effort’’ to refund as much money as possible and give travel vouchers as well. Balmoral, Carson Graham, Argyle and Handsworth schools had planned to send a total of 63 students to Germany and Austria. Handsworth had also planned to send 14 students to Paris, France and 30 students to Jupan. Sutherland had planned to send 30 students to London, England, the scene of an Irish Republican Army attack last week that dam- aged the facade of No. 10 Down- ing Street during a meeting of the British cabinet. The IRA bombing was unrelated to the Gulf War. Board chairman Marg Jessup thanked Kelly for helping to or- ganize the trips and then = ad- ministering the consulting process that allowed final decisions to be made entirely by the students, parents and teachers, rather than by administrators.
