The West Vancouver firefighters recently donated some off-duty time to build concrete fire pits at the east end of Ambleside Beach. West Vancouver Parks Department provided the materials. The fire department reminds residents that beach fires are only permiit- ted at Ambleside Beach from east of the old swimming pool site to the turnaround. Beach fires are not permiited elsewhere in West Vancouver including private preperty. Ambleside Beach fires are permitted seven days a week from 10 2.m. to 11 p.m. Concert to aid — Crisis Centre A CONCERT being held on. Thursday, July 20 is your chance to suppori the Crisis Centre and take in an evening of original music as well. Performer Rick Poltaruk, a vol- unteer at the Crisis Centre, recent- ly moved from Yellowknife where he was the official town crier. On July 20, he will be doing a benefit concert for the Centre at North Vancouver's Centennial Theatre. A popular song writer, actor, singer, children’s performer and comedian, Poltaruk promises a “fairly high energy’? evening with” his original music, which ranges from ‘‘country crossing over to an R&B-type flavor.”’ There will be no obscenities in the lyvics, he says, so bring along the kids. The show will be opened by Vancouver's Beverley Elliott, a country singer and actress. Local comedian Dwight Fenon will also be there to entertain the audience. The per- formance starts at 8 p.m. Kids brush up on writing skills YOUTH WRITING camps for eight- to 12-year-olds are being of- fered this summer by the West Vancouver Recreation Centre. Under the guidance of author/ storyteller Robert Stelmach, children will experience the pleasure of readin: and writing their own stories in a creative, stimulating and playful environ- ment. Stelmach is author of the Land of Graws series of poems and stories. He was invited to tell Stories at the recent Canadian Book Publishers Trade Show and will perform in the fall at the Seat- tle Arts Festival. The camps are scheduled from July 24 to 28 for H- to 12-year- olds, and August 14 to {8 for cight- to 10-year-colds, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Classes will be held indoors and outdoors, weather permitting, and all writing supplies are included.
