correct oil

An SAE 30 motor oil is a single
grade oil. SAE 5W-30 and SAE
10W-30 motor oils are multi-
viscosity oils, providing good cold
weather start-up and operating
condition protection.

If the *‘SAE”’ designation isn’t
in front of the viscosity grade, then
don't buy the motor oil. You'll
have no assurance that the viscosi-
ty grade shown on the label is the
viscosity grade of the moter oil in
the container.

The service rating, as determined
by the American Petroleum In-
stitute, or API, can broadly be in-
terpreted as the motor oil’s ability
to withstand punishment — to take
the heat.

The most advanced motor oii
rating for passenger cars is “API
SG” which replaced ‘‘API SI’’ in
March 1988.

The most advanced rating for
heavy duty diesel engine use is
“API CD.”

Virtually all passenger cars pur-
chased in Canada after 1988 will
require API SG motor oils.
