ONCE A month a group of people
meet at Lions Gate Hospital to
share information and concerns
and to offer mutual support.

These peopie share something in
common -- they have all had a
head injury.

Although most people become
head injured as a result of a car
accident, some suffer brain injury
from a spontaneous hemorrhage or
other medical condition which
causes temporary oxygen depriva-
tion to parts of the brain.

Regardless of the cause of the
injury, many people have similar
after-effects. For example, many
report problems with short-term
memory (memory of recent
events). Others have relationship
concerns caused by personality
changes, such as increased ir-
titability.

Many report difficulties in con-
centration and fee! a loss of con-
fidence. Some find it hard to
return to former work or academic
pursuits. Families, too, are af-
fected by the results of a head in-
jury and personality changes in a
family member can be distressing.

The monthly group meetings at-
tempt to address some of these
concerns with group members
providing support and advice to
one another. Members report that
it helps to talk with people who
understand.

second Wednesday of every month
at Lions Gate Hospital, in Seminar

The 1989 agenda includes such
topics as memory strategies, se!f-
esteem, relationship and vocational
concerns. The first meeting of the
new year will be held on Wednes-
