AFTER THREE years of filming,
production and sitting on the shelf,
a film by three North Shore men
has reached the Vancouver Inter-
national Film Festival.

Shooting for the $330,000
Regeneration. started in 1984 in
Vancouver with the film-makers —
producer Tony Dean, director
Russell Stephens and composer Bill
Napier-Hemy — going against the
commercial grain ‘‘and bucking
the system.”*

“They say you have to make a
commercial film’ and go for the
mass market,’? explained Dean,
30. ‘‘In retrospect we could have
made. more money if we made a
Rambo film...we’re trying to make
some cinematic and artistic state-
ments.”

Focusing on scientist/inventor '

tion delves into the discovery of a
method of bringing people back to
life from photographs.

When word of the professor’s
discovery reaches the world, the
reaction is less than ideal, and the
whole of modern society then
begins to fall apart.

Both film students from Simon
Fraser University, Dean and
Stephens joined up to create the
film, which followed from a earlier
short piece by Stephens.

“I was looking for a production
I could really wrestle with and sink
my teeth into,’’ Dean explained of
how he got involved with the
Regeneration movie. .

Critical response to the film so
far has been poor, but Dean puts
that down to a press screcning
beset with technical problems and
a lengthy series of films.

“That did not reflect the mood

of the audience,’’ he said of the
premiere.
_ The next film festival showing of
Regeneration is set for Oct. 27 at
4:30 p.m. at the Pacific
Cinematheque Pacifique, 1131!
