ag bo] Ba ay ea as ay NO MATTER how new your car is, regular maintenance is important for keeping your vehicle safe and economicai. Regular maintenance necessary THE BEST insurance against breakdowns and repairs is good maintenance. Now is the time to take the car for a tune-up to get safely through the winter. The B.C. Automobile Associa- tion has designated October as Car Care Month to remind local motorists that regular maintenance is one of the best ways to avoid possible automotive problems dur- ing the upcoming winter months. Coid weather puts extra de- mands on your car. Here’s what to keep an eye on: Lights: all lights and flashers should be in good working order. Lights that do not work when fit- ted with a new bulb indicate a blown fuse or loose connection. Belts: belts for fan, alternator and water pump should be in good condition and tightened correctly. Worn, frayed belts are dangerous and can slip, leading to decreased performance and possible later trouble. Leaks: Fluid leaks are dangerous and wasteful. Watch out for leaks fron: radiator, engine pan, valve cover, oil filter, clutch housing, transmission, brakes, rear axle, gas tank, shock absorbers, fuel pump and lines, steering box and exhaust system. Ensure antifreeze is adequate for driving conditions, and leave it in during the summer to prevent rust that will clog up the system. Brake fluid: Brake fluid should be changed once a year, but is fre- quently neglected until a major brake job comes along. With old fluid, air and moisture can creep into the system and cause brake failure. Hoses: Radiator hoses can easily become cracked or soft. Drivers should keep an eye out for leaks, loose clips or metal parts chafing the rubber, Oil: if the oil falls below the danger mark on the dipstick, serious engine damage can result, so oil levels should be checked regularly. Should the oil level be too high, the engine may build up excess pressure and blow gaskets. Radiator: Frequently check the fluid level inside to ensure it is not too low. When removing the radiator cap to check the coolant level, do it slowly to let the pressure out gradually. 29 - Wednesday, October 14, 1987 - North Shore News Install oil ite, . » Complete chassis lube * 16 point safety check « Up to 5L Premium Quality oil * Takes only 5/10 minutes Top quality products on all cars, light trucks and motorhomes.
