(Ian Smith photo) The last Olympic Torch? ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece (UPI) - The rays of the sun Wednesday kindled the flame that will burn at Lake Placid during the 13th Winter Olympics in a ceremony at the original site of the Olympic Games. A torch was placed inside a concave mirror by Greek actress Maria Moscholiou of the National Theater to ig- nite the flame in the ceremony in ancient Olym- pia that was followed by the start of the torch-bearing relay by a local athlete. George Ghikas, 20, ran with the torch for 4 miles to the village of Platanos where the flame was transported by car to a nearby airport for a flight to Athens. Once in Athens, the flame was carried by a relay of Greek athletes to the Olym- pic stadium, site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The Rev. J. Bennett Fell, president of the Lake Placid organizing committee in a speech before the torch was lit, thanked Greek sports authorities for their assistance and said the U.S. Olympic Committee will support the efforts for the return of the Games to their place of origin in Greece.
