nominees for award

Vancouver is one of 1!6 British
Columbia innovators being con-
sidered by the Manning Awards
for the 1986 $75,000 Principal
Award and the two $25,000 Awards
of Merit.

The British Columbia residents
were nominated for innovations
ranging from computerized
assistance programs for the physi-
cally disabled to a new type of

helicopter fire fighting bucket.
Nominations for the 1986 awards,
which closed March 1, are being
considered now by the Founda-
tion's Selection Committee.

The Ernest C. Manning Awards
Foundation, established in 1980 to
promote the recognition and en-
couragement of Canadian in-
novators in all disciplines, is a na-
tional, privately funded, non-
profit organization.

Whistles
hazardous
to young
children

THE PRODUCT Safety Branch of
Consumer and Corporate Affairs
Canada warns consumers about 2
small novelty whistle which may be
hazardous when used by young
children,

Commonly referred to as ‘‘The
Wonderful Double Throat or Swiss
Warbler Bird Call,’’ the item is a
tiny metal and leather whistle that
rests on the tongue and is blown by
being pressed against the roof of
the mouth.

The instructions with the pro-
duct warn that it should be kept
away from toddlers. However, a
young child could possibly inhale
the whistle, causing a breathing
obstruction.

The Product Safety Branch
therefore advises that the item be
kept away from young children.

It should be noted that the whis-
tle does not contravene any reguila-
tions under the Hazardous Pro-
ducts Act, and no reports of inju-
ries have been received. The
branch is issuing the warning as a
precautionary measure to ensure
child safety.
