Baby business pays JUST ASK Marilyn Taylor and Libby Ordel. The two women are pro- ducing the second Babies in the 80s event. By) DAWN BURKE Babies in the 80s is of- ficially licensed as a public market. But it is much more. The three day event, Friday through Sunday, at Robson Square Media Centre, in- cludes fashion shows, retail booths, demonstrations, a free childminding service, a mothers room, a toy room, draws, free pamphlets and samples, Five thousand people are expected to attend the show, billed this year as The Big Event. If these estimates are correct, the event would at- tract more than 2,000 than attended last year’s. BALANCING ACT Demonstrations and per- formances are scheduled on such varied topis as toys, crib safety, CPR, a diaper demo, exercise, entertain- ment, fitness and a best bouncing baby competition. Taylor and Ordel both have an intimate knowledge of babies, and business, in the 80s, Both are mothers, both are businesswomen, And both try to balance the difficult task of giving to one job without taking away from the other. The two women were looking for a way to combine their tal- ents and go into business, They wanted to produce a consumer show but needed a winning concept. Babies in the 80s has mide those dreams come true. Taylor says the concept allows her merchandising background and Orde}’s promotions background to become the perfect combina- tion of talents to make the show a success. CONTINUED SUCCESS Taylor insists she is not the stereotypical career woman. ‘‘Career mother implies that your time is split 90-10 career versus family,”’ she says. ‘‘We are not cor- porate women — we run a small business. We're nor- mal women who own a business and happen to have careers and be mothers.’’ Pants reg. to $210. Blouses reg. to $110 Sweaters reg. to $120 And, she says, ‘‘Family comes first.’’ To make sure future shows continue the success started last year, marketing students from Capilano Col- lege will be conducting a survey as a class project. Consumers will be asked what they do and don’t like about the event and how it can be improved. And the success of last year's pro- duction has led to serious offers to bring the’ event to Toronto. BROAD RANGE Taylor denies the show is exclusively for yuppies, up- wardly mobile parents with a lot of money to spend on one or two children. “We try to ensure we have a broad range of products and services, not just for yuppies,’’ Taylor says. ‘it’s also for grandparents and other family members. Statistics show there are more non-traditional fami- lies. We do take this into ac- count and the show is not geared to rich people.”’ \ Discount Designer Fashions Ow $495.5] 39 now 19% ~85 5s now 91.97 ~95 9% Through Sunday Oct. 27 Open: Mon.-Thurs. & Sat 10-5:30 pm Fridays 10-8 pm Sun. 12-4 p.m. 1079 Marine Drive, North Van 980-2208 parking int rear #105-6950 Nicholson, N.
