RCMP and the West Van-
couver police are currently
studying their policies on
false alarms and there are in-
dications that municipal
legislation may be called for.

Such legislation would
give police a way of dealing
with the growing number of

. false alarms in North Shore

homes.

While nothing specific has
been announced as yet, it is
believed the police forces
are eyeing means of
establishing priorities for
responses to alarms. In cases
‘where the homeowner is a
repeat offender as far as
false alarms are concerned,
the of the police
response to subsequent
alarms could be lengthened.

The false alarm issue is not

weekend, police answered

tion of which were false.

And the cause, according
to Cpl. Les Fox of West Van
police, is usually user error,
because of unfamiliarity with
the system or because doors
have been inadvertently left
open when the alarmsystem
is turned on.

mechanical or electrical pro-

blems in the system itself — .

and even such things as
household pets tripping
alarm systems — and you

ing looked at by police
departments in North and
West Van is that, after a
number of false: alarms in a.
set period of time, the priori-
ty given further alarms could
be downgraded.

alarm sounding for an actual
break-in or theft, could.
leave some homeowners a
little unhappy.
