By DOREEN BARTH For those of us who have visited there, it is the “little house on the corner,” where you are accepted as you are, made to feel welcome by a friendly staff and cosy at- mosphere. It is a place where you are given information on a multitude of North Shore activities, other agencies, and best of all, perhaps it is even a stepping stone to greater riches in life than you have ever before ex- perienced — some find it through a_ counselling session — or through one of the many workshops of- fered, under the guidance of an experienced and trained counsellor. In all the turmoil of change in our society, one fact has become very clear; we need to recapture in a new way such simple exper- iences as love, understand- ing, communication and family co-operation. We need new eyes for seeing the riches that already lie at our feet — riches which often lie untouched within our own souls. We need programs to assist the churches and other agencies in the community to reduce individual and family breakdown by pre- paring people for fulness of life. The Centre was created in response to these needs. Its objective ts to comple- ment the pastoral and other social service agencies of the community Registered 980-9419 under the Society’s Act of the Province, the Centre functions as a _ private society, supported by a membership of interested citizens in the community. This membership elects a Board of Directors to ad- minister the affairs of the Centre under the terms of its constitution. As well as being supported by individual members of the community, the Centre is also supported by churces of the community, Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Health, Municipal Governments and private donations. The Judeao-Christian tra- dition has always included a concern for healing. Pastoral counselling is one of the contemporary expres- sions of that concern and is one of the major services offered by the Centre. The techniques of psychology. psychiatry and social work are applied within the frame- work of the community of faith. The pastoral coun- sellor works closely with WOMEN + FOOD TRAVEL Living and learning representatives of psychia- try, psychology, social work and community agencies to ensure that persons who come for counselling receive the help they need. Take for instance a work- shop on Stress, Relaxation and Prayer. You are taught skills and knowledge to use every day of your life — just as we brush our teeth every- day, we can actually get into the habit of avoiding stress and learning to relax — it can become a habit! What could be more beneficial to an exhausted mother, up- tight executive, or a bewil- dered student. Another workshop which will be starting as soon as there are enough people, is on recession frustrations for people who are anticipating disruption — who have been laid off recently and/or are having difficulty finding employment, — who are on the road to stability, but would like to be part of a group. Feel free to drop in any- time between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and dis- cuss the possibility of the workshops coming up in the Fall.
