It built 504.000 of those vehicles last year in addition to 1.7 milhon motorcycles. “As a leading producer of vehicles smaller than any GM manufactures, Suzuki offers products and production capacity which can be of interest in many parts of GM's” worldwide marketing network, and GM has technology in’ many fields which is of interest to Suzuki,” said GM Chairman Roger B. Smith. Details, precisely what including type of vehicle would be involved, where it would be sold and when, were not released. The partnership was only the latest in a_ series of Strategic alliances between U.S. and automakers. The automaker Isuzu, GM's existing Japanese partner, also was brought into the deal through an exchange of 10 million shares of stock with Suzuki. GM owns 34.2 percent of Isuzu, which builds a version of Gm's new subcompact J car and supplies the US. firm with small pickup trucks and engines. The model lineups of Isuzu and Suzuki are said to complement each other. cord Motor Co. 1s a part owner of the Japanese automaker Toyo Kogyo, which is expected to supply the No 2 automaker with a small car for the U.S. market in 1984.
