Benefit concert scheduled

It may be some time
till February 7-8, but
plans are well un-
derway for an_ in-
ternational gathering of
blind skiers competing
at Cypress Bowl in
West Vancouver.

More than 100 blind skiers
from the United States,
Norway and Canada will be
taking to the cross country
trails at Cypress in the an-
nual event sponsored by the
Sons of Norway who have
supported the program for
five years.

To help defray the ex-
pected $37,000 expenses for
the week long activities, a
benefit concert featuring
Leon Bibb and _ Eleanor
Collins will be held at the
North Van Centennial
Theatre on Saturday,
November 15 at 8p.m.

On Monday night the City
of North Vancouver donated
$500 to the local Sons of
Norway chapter for the Ski

For Light program. The
District of North Van and
West Van will also be ap-
proached for assistance.

“Ski for Light” grew from
the idea that it is ability that
counts, not disability. In
1978, Sons of Norway,
Nordic Lodge in Castlegar,
B.C., hosted the first
Canadian Regional “Ski for
Light”. It was a two-day
gathering of blind = cross-
country skiers and sighted
guides. With a weekend of
instruction ending with a
competition, the first event
was a great success.

Lodge No. 8 is‘ hosting the
1981 Canadian International
“Ski for Light” in the first
week of February. In ad-
dition to skiing, “Ski for
Light Canada °81” will in-
clude “pulking”, a sport
which allows paraplegics to
enjoy the wonders of snow.
