HE MARRIAGE was
fine until the husband
showed up.

Architect Newton Davis (Steve
Martin) built a custom home for
his high school sweetie, Becky
(Dana Delany) as a marriage pro-
posal. Surprisingly, she declines.

Hard to believe anyone who
jogs in perfectly preppy plaid and
pearls would turn down free real
estate. But no matter.

Three months later someone
else takes up her offer. Only
Newton doesn’t know it.

Gwen, a waitress with a genius
for whoppers (and | don’t mean
burgers) moves in after Newton, a
little in his cups, lets slip he had a
house sitting vacant in his Norman

-Rockwell hometown.

A master mythomaniac, Gwen
fabricates a marriage between the
absentee landlord and herseli,
fooling the entire town including
Davis’ parents.

Even the stores give her credit.

Everything's hunky dory until her
husband-in-theory arrives.

After the initial outrage at this
apparent re-enactment of David
Letterman’s real-life nightmare,
Newton starts to see some benefits
to her amazing lying skills.

The old Newton was a mess.
The new Newton gets promoted,
reconciled with his father, and
most importantly, he gets a second
crack at the person he built the
house for in the first place.

The hardest type of movie to
review is the trivial kind. And
believe me, Housesitter is trivial —
pure summer froth with a couple
of big-buck stars, but no surprises.
