DESIGN AND WEIGHT IMPORTANT Don’t be misled by big motors MANY PEOPLE think that a large-horsepower outboard motor on the back of a boat means “*fast”’ or ‘‘speedboat.’’ The hull design and the weight of the boat, however, must be taken into con- sideration : before drawing that conclusion. Each size boat is specially rated for a maximum-size engine that coast guard officials feel is a safe limit. But for the pleasure boater, choosing an engine is more than just following the rating — there are other factors to consider. One manufacturer’s 18-foot boat might weigh 650 pounds, while another’s might weigh 1,200 pounds, and both would be rated for the same maximum _horse- power. A 150-horsepower motor on a 650-pound bass boat is cer- tainly faster than the same horse- power ona 1,200-pound boat. Think about this in relation to automobiles. A 2,000-pound small car with a 100-horsepower motor performs just fine, but what if that same motor were installed in a 5,000-pound van or truck? Most quality fishing boats weigh more than a pleasure boat of the same size, due to the necessary storage compartments, extra bat- teries, trolling motor and other fishing gear. Another thing to consider is that a 150-horsepower motor at 75 per cent full throttle uses approximate- ly the same amount of fuel as a 100-horsepower motor at fuil throttle, with both boats -unning at approximately the same seed.
