PACKER REGENT COLLEGE Wil be speaking at our Yarn and 10:30am service on Sunday, April 2nd your message of worship on this page, call Tara Lalanne at To include ae 0511. Singing together for ce Pastor Jamey McDonald Contributing Columnist AN old seminary professor of mine used to say “preaching builds community, but then again so does singing together.” He went on to explain that people listening to the same message, together, build a spe- cial bond between the listeners as they share the experience of _a good sermon. (I have been preaching for 20 years now, I am still waiting for the con- summate experience of com- munity through my preach- ing, but that is another story). I have thought a lot about the second half of his state- ment lately — the idea of singing together building community. Having partcipat- ed in a number of karaoke sing-a-longs I think he might have been on to something. Tam not suggesting we reinvent Sunday mornings with a karaoke machine (then again, why not?) but I am appealing, to the joy of singing together. Singing in a group proves the ald adage of “the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.” Think of a Christmas carol sing at a secular office party. Strange mistiness comes over the room! (And nor just from the excess of Christmas spirits either.) Think of the smiles as a farnily sings “Happy Birthday” toa child, or a grandmother. Think of the ringing of the arena when the national anthem is played and thou- sands join together to sing “O Canada”. It is the singing together that creates some- thing electric in the group. Christianity in its finest is a musical faith. Much of the classical music that continues from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries is religious in back- ground. Choral groups worth their salt seem to include a spiritual number in their repertoire. The Psalms, the Jewish and Christian songbook, regularly remind their followers to “sing untae the Lord” (some 68 times to be precise). Even Hollywood periodically cap- tures the music of the Christian faith in their offer- ings. (Two of my favourite movies do so anyway — Whoopi Goldberg is admirable in her, Sister Act productions, and ! still wistful- ly remember Brad Pitt’s church scenes in A River Runs Through It.) Even for those that don’t sing, the Christian movement proves inclusive — encourag- ing even the ungifted to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” (I say to parishioners that means singing quietly, but with a smile.) To that end the Christian churches of the North Shore have begun a movement of coming together on a periodic Sunday evening for a “Hymnfest.” Originally the brain child of Art and Daisy Degagne of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, it was conceived as something we could do together rather than apart (i.e. minunity create community! ). The first gathering was in October of fast year and saw over 300 persons enjoy 90 minutes of life as they sang hymns from all particular vari- eties and traditions. Building on the success, the Centennial Theatre has been booked for the next Hymnfest scheduled for May 7 at 7 p.m. (You have to love people acting in faith!) This time all 35 North Shore Christian churches are being invited to come along for a wonderful evening of hymn singing. There is no cost for admitiance though a free will offering will be taken to cover expenses. Besides the enjoyment of the music.there is the desire for the community of faith being strengthened. By all means make plans to come along. For further information contact Art or Daisy Gagne at 987-4070. ~— Pastor Jamey McDonald is the pastor at the Delbrook Baptist Church in North Vancouver.
