expand and contract considerably over the year, therefore a flexible
type of finish is required. However, before any finish is applied it is
important to prepare the metal surface by first removing. all hard-
ware including hinges. You will want to put a temporary panel in
place while you do the finishing. Sand the door lightly with
300/400 grit wet/dry paper to break any sheen the door may have.
After sanding, wash the door faces with Shell Busey’s Home
Cleaning Formula (Medium Duty) and rinse well with clean water.
Apply two coats of exterior urethane with pure bristle brush but do
the edges first, then one face at a time. Each face will require
approximately 10-12 hours drying time before you turn to finish
the opposite side. Rehang the door between coats as 12-24 hours
are required before full curing takes place. Temperatures of 60-70F
and a dust free environment are required for a satisfactory job.
