NEWS photo Brad Ledwidge worker contract a go COMMUNITY health care workers from nine unions . voted earlier this month 81% “to ratify a new collective agree- ment with the Health Employers’ Association of BC (HEABC). The agreement covers about 14,000 women and men who provide commu- nity based health care. They include home support workers, and people who work in drug and alco- ho! treatment centres, adult day care, detox and emergency shelters, womens’ clinics, services to seniors, mental health group homes and regional health units. “This was 2 cough set of negotiations. But we have achieved a fair and acceptable contract for the women and men who work every day to make it possible for thousands of British Columbians to live with dignity in their own homes and communities,” said Cliff Andstein, spokesman for the multi-union bargaining associa- tion. The key provisions of the three-year contract include significant improve- ments to wages and benefits, employ- ment security, scheduling of hours for home support workers, hours of work, workplace health and safety, and break- through provisions for job evaluation and classification. The agreement also maintains the terms of conditions for workers who transferred into the community sector through devolution of municipal health departments and the Ministry of Health. “Community health-care workers have traditionally been well behind other health-care workers in terms of wages and benefits, and working condi- tions,” Andstein said. “With the strong support of our” members in a strike vote, and a half day strike in July, we were able to make sig- nificant gains. “This contract gocs a long way towards eliminating inequities.” How can the AirCare Program be improved?
