So before we give you aRich Elwood’s latest: some background. :-Elwood, for all those in the Canadian comedic know, helped establish stand-up comedy west of the Rockies during the past two decades. The 42-year-old North Shore resident arrived in AVancouver from Toronto in 1977 bound for a career in Me radio: Station C-Fun — then in its hip heyday — beckoned. ’ Comedy, however, beckoned more. ‘ Elwood, who honed his early routines in Toronto’s Starvin’ Marvin’s strip club, founded his Punchlines come- se dy club in March 1978 in the basement of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. A humble beginning, indeed. But the local hunger for humor stretched that beginning into one of the longest running jokes in Vancouver. By that time, Punchlines was well on its way to establish- ing itself as one of the key stand-up comedy clubs on the West Coast. North America’s stand-up comedy community is rela- tively small and tight-knit. Elwood, who had been plying his trade since he was 18, was an integral part of that community. He was comedically connected. With Elwood at the helm Punchlines attracted some of the brightest talents in comedy: Dennis Miller, Jay Leno, Howie Mandell and a then-unknown Jim Carrey. Punchlines cultivated a stand-up comedy style that was clean and clever. A lot like Elwood himself.
