Residents get
break on lights

NORTH VAN City council
passed an amendment bylaw
Monday that will allow
residents on St. Georges
Avenue between Tenth St.
and Keith Road to opt out of
a street lighting plan.

Council had planned in
1981 to put public. street
lights along !3th St. from St.
David’s to Bewicke Avenue,
and along other nearby
streets, north of }3th.

But, according to Ald.
Stella Jo Dean, residents liv-
ing in the now exempted area
petitioned in 1981 against
Street lights, citing an = in-
crease in taxes as one of their
objections.

Dean, who at Monday’s
meeting voted against the
amendment, said she sup-
ported having street lighting
as being a prevention agaisnt
crime.

**T don’t think we should
succumb to a group of people
if it isn’t for the benefit of the
whole community,”’ she said.
