But the recent boom of the
province's | “adventure-tourist”
industry has seen a host of new
choices put on the plate.

The rugged mountains and lush
valleys may be some of the most
beautiful scenery to be found any-
where, and to a hang-glider, those
mountains offer a chance to soar
with the eagles in same of the best
terrain for hang-gliding to be found
anywhere. A network of backcoun-
try roads take flyers to a host of
launch sites throughout the
province,

If soaring on thermals isn't your
thing — a little to “out there” —
the province's mountains and
forests allow wildlife enthusiasts to
view a variety of birds and mam-
mals unequaled in Canada. In all,
112 species of mammals find a
suitable home in B.C. and 74 of
them are not found in any other
Canadian province. For example,

three-quarters of the world’s Stone
sheep live in British Columbia,
three-fifths of its mountain goats,
half of the trumpeter swans and
blue yrouse and a quarter of the
bald eagles and grizzly bears,

For the more aquatic- minded,
ocean canoeing — possibilities
abound all along British
Columbia's — protected — coastal
waterways. Tidal currents flushing
through the Gulf Islands provide
exciting canoeing to challenge the
most advanced, with unparalleled
scenery, including distant: snow-
supped mountains, Kayakers, how-
ever, can take advantage of hun-
dreds more of the smaller rivers
and streams running steeply in nar-
row gorges.

There are two irresistible attrac-
tions in finding these waterways —
the challenges they present to
kayaking skills and the mountain
and forest scenery they reveal,
quite often inaccessible by any
other means.

Also, some of the best areas for
river kayaking are mere minutes
from downtown Vancouver. The
steep-walled stone gorge of
Capilano Canyon in North
Vancouver is a favorite ride for
white-water riders.

All in all, British Columbia
offers something for everyone
when it comes to wilderness
adventure. The people of the
province of B.C. have put out the
welcome mat to the world’s adven-
turers,
