The two were arrested shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday. ’ The police stopped a 1980 Ford Mustang near 15th Street and Clyde Avenue and seized the shotgun and sey- eral shotgun shells. The teens are scheduled to appear in West Vanconver provincial court on Sept. 12. Paddiers become one with Squamish canoe From page 3 powerful,” said paddler Siamtenaat Milnitdi, Klatle-Bhi’s 25-year-old fiancée. “We help maintain the bal- ance of the crew. Everything has a male and female side, even us.” Also, Kiatle-Bhi laughed, “They keep us in line and stop us from being like a construction crew.” The only disadvantage of female crew members js that when they are “on their moon” (menstru- ating) they cannot paddle the canoe, because it is thought that their extra power at this time could crack the boat. If this happens on the journey, or if any other crew members need a break, there are spare paddlers on the escort boat the coast guard requires. Tn any case, there will be no stalling because of weather. Rain or shine, “we go,” said Kiatle-Bhi. “Rain’s a good cleansing.” Siamtenaat Milnitdi knows what the trip will entail. She joined the crew last year, and took part in last summer’s journey to Bella Bella. “I wanted to live, just a litle bit, as our ancestors lived,” she said. “This was their way of life and I want to experience that. “The Squamish ocean-going canoes were like the cars of today for the families of our people,” she explained. “They'd go out fishing, travelling.” Like this modern crew, the early native canoeists were equipped with paddles, which were puinted with the images of animal spirits. “Each paddle tells about who we are and where we're from,” said Klatle-Bhi. “These paddles have to become an extension of ourselves.” Siamtenaat Milnitdi will use a paddle Klatle-Bhi painted for her, emblazoned with a design of an eagle. When she has visions, she said, she is the eagle flying above the canoe. Because the eagle flies so high, it is seen as carrying prayers to the other world. She is well aware that such prayers may be necessary on a journey such as this one. “It is challenging — physically, spiritu- ally, and emotionally,” she said. “T know when we're out there we'll hit the wall. ‘It happened last year. We hit the wall and had to keep paddling to the next place.” FUTON BLOWOUT! Dol. $397 “eo Indudes scid pine. sofa becirome. tnple foam core futon.
