Answers are intended only asa general guide and should not be applied to individual cases without further consultation. QUESTION: A friend of mine was recently called for jury duty. She ended up serving in 2 criminal court trial for several weeks. Now IT have received a summons to appear! I am a self. employed businessman, and | honestly could not take unsched- uled time away from my work without scriously jeopardizing my livelihood. I appreciate that serving as a juror is a civic duty, but are there exceptions? Answer: Individuals do have the right and duty to serve as jurors unless disqualified or exempted under the Jury Act of B.C. Some of these exceptions include persons who are not Canadian citizens or who are not residents of the province. or peo- ple who have been convicted of The Little Rascals certain criminal offences. In addition, people who are summoned to jury duty can ask to be exempted for other personal reasons. These can include med- ical reasons, financial hardship, er other business or personal com- mitnents. Exemptions will not be given for mere inconvenience which every juror must face. Your rea- sons sound dike more than an inconvenience and the chances are very good that you would be excused from jury duty. For further information about being excused, contact the sher- ifs office from which you received the summons. In Howe Sound Vancouver, the phone number is 460-2603. You may be able to request an exemption in writing in advance of the date you are summoned to appear, or you may have to address the presiding judge at jury selection, You may address the judge verbally or in writing. You will receive $10 for each day that you have to attend for jury selection. Those who are cho- sen to sit as jurors will be given $20 for each day. If a trial lasts longer than ten days, the fee is increased to $30 per day. In addition, a flat rate of $6 per day will be paid as a transporta- tion and parking allowance.
