Red Cross leadership camp is teen-driven THIS SUMMER the Fraser Region Red Cross is offering a Youth Leadership Camp that helps young people develop leadership abilit valuable communication skills, and international awareness. The 24th-annual seminar will be held at Camp Squeah (just north of Hope, B.C.) during the week of Aug. 28 to Sept. 2. Delegates from all over B.C. in Grades 9-12 are encouraged to attend. The fee is $210, which includes a T-shirt, transportation from Vancouver to the camp and accommodations for the week. In response to the concerns of young people, the seminur address- es issues such as peer pressure, values, assertiveness, conflict reso- lution and goal setting. The main goal of the seminar is to develop positive attitudes, knowledge and skills which will enable young people to effectively contribute to the betterment of society. As the Red Cross relies on the work of volunteers. there will be a presentation that focuses on volunteer opportunities available to young people. A unique feature of the seminar is that it is coordinated and led by young people. The leaders of the camp catnplete professional facili tation training over the course of the summer enabling them to be effective peer leaders. The camp is an interactive edu- cational experience where the par- ticipants learn practical techniques such as first aid and boating safety, as well as communication and leadership skills. The result is a fun, interactive peer-led environ- ment in which to learn. The Red Cross is now accepting applications to Summer Seminar, which can be obtained by contitct- i the Canadian Red Cross ing Society. The application deadling is Aug. 1, and attendance is limited to 90 young people.
