that only the high-profile com-
mercial galleries or those that have
the good fortune of being publicly
funded are able to survive.

Some artists seem immune to ravages of recession

handle for reasons that generally

have fess to do with issues of in-
trinsic worth of originality than
with idiosyncracies of perspective
or politics.

Two artists of the post-punk in-
ner-city art scene who seem to be
immune to the ravages of the
recession are West Vancouver's
Marta and Davide Pan.

To some extent filling the void
left by Gallery 56 and Smash is the
new Soul Art Gallery, which
opened last March with a solo ex-
hibit of Marta Pan’s psychedelical-
ly surreal mixed-media works.

Located at 305 Water St., five
stories above the street corner that
harbors Gastown’s steam clock,
the Soul Art Gallery is the creation
of Marta Pan and co-owner/jazz
musician Richard Thorne, who
books jazz and other exotic musi-
cians into the gallery Thursday and
Friday nights.

Its current exhibit, which open-
ed Thursday, June 3, provides a
cross-section of works by the Arts
in Action group, which organized
the Fear of Others exhibition in
1989,

This group show ranges from the
diminutive fanciful prints of Luule
Sova to Jeannie Kamin’s fabric ap-
plique portrait of Montreal sym-
phony conductor Agnes
Grossman,

Of particular interest sculpturally
are Bill Thomson’s robot-like
assemblage, The Gear (Study #3),
contrived of silver-painted found
wood objects, and Josef Holy’s
bold iconographic wood
sculpture, Water.
