The Ferry Building, 1414 Argyle Ave., West Vancouver.

The Ferry Building

AT THE turn of the century, long
before any bridges spanned Bur-
tard Inlet, the only means of
. crossing from West Vancouver to
Vancouver was by boat.

A ferry service was started in
1909/1910 by a private company
ef four shareholders, one of
whom was Jchn Lawson. It was
operated at the foot of 17th
Street, where Hollyburn Pier now
stands.

This ferry service. was taken
over by the then newly-formed
Municipality of West Vancouver,
‘and it was moved to the foot of

14th Street, where a wharf and |

ferry building were constructed in
1913.

The Ferry Building served as the
terminal and offices for this ser-
vice. Through the years the second
floor of this building served as a
meeting place for the Ferry Cor-
poration board meetings, local
‘Fatepavers groups, the masons,
and First World War veterans.
