Contest encourages civic pride WE'VE ALL heard of the “body beautiful’ but how about the ‘block beautiful’? By Barbara Black News Reporter The North Shore Gardens Con- test Committee has come up with the idea of the North Shore Block Beautiful Awards ‘91. he idea is to recognize the efforts of our neighbors whose gatdens visible from the street make their block a source Of pride. Says Rete McKay. coordinator for the event, “The idea originally came from. Ontario. The Windsor Star (newspaper) started it in their small city and it became very suc- cesstud.** But unlike the bedy beautiful, this is not, technically. a contest. {tis more an opportunity to en- courage neighborliness, and as McKay puts it, “to create more interest in the community of beautifying the streets and possibly making the North Shore the garden basket of the Lower Mainland.”* And further offshoots of an at- tractive neighborhood ure increas- ed civic pride and even tourism. It's also a good way to celebrate the centennial of civic government on the North Shore. McKay points out that blocks can be nominated for not only at- tractive gardens, but attractive house fronts or restorative work, as in ine case of heritage com- munities. Wednesday.
