And we need more of you to give,"’ is the theme of the United Way fund-raising campaign this year. The North Shore Neighbour- hood House is one of 86 member agencies plus the Red Cross needing a successful United Way campaign to assure funding for the Services they provide to local peo- ple. Located at 225 East 2nd St. in North Vancouver, the North Shore Neighbourkood House provides social and recreational services for children, teens,. adults, families, . seniors and the unemployed. In 1987, an estimated 15,992 people attended programs, and 13,224 in- dividuals received food from the food bank, “We're going to be in even greater demand,’’ states program director Lesley Beleski, ‘with. the development and expansion that is taking place in the area.” For seniors, the neighborhocd -house hosts the Keep Well’ pro- gram which encourages seniors to be responsible for their health. There is currently a registration of about 200 people. “Members can learn about nutrition, have their blood pressure checked, participate in relaxation exercises and the weekly walking club. Guest . Speakers also prompt members to take a more active role in their own community,”’ Beleski said. A summer day camp program at the neighborhood house provides a chance for children between the ages of six and 12 from lower in- come families to go swimming and _enjoy group games and crafts under the supervision of a counsellor. Beleski estimates 150 Set up an aquarium. CHILDREN CAN learn how to set up their own aquariums at a workshop offered by the West Van _ Rec Centre. A job development program at North “Shore Neighbourhood House trains schizophrenic men and women to lead independent lives by providing them with carpentry and woodworking skills. Begun in May,-the program is an adjunct to one offered by the Ca- nadian Menta! Health Association, also a United Way member agen- cy. *“We’re planning on 100 per cent job placement,’’ said Doug Sabourin, executive director of NSNH. “We determined that the market for carpenters was good and it was a skill that was an ex- tension of high schcol which makes transition easier.”’ One member of the program, 23-year-old James Scott said, ‘‘We build shelves, picnic tables, plant- ers and anything else the neighborhood house needs.”’ Scott is optimistic about his future when he graduates from the program this month. ‘‘! feel-great. After I leave here I’ll get a job and maybe a house with some friends. I’ve never had that before. I've got other ideas too.
