THINKING OF a quick visit to Reno? Consider making the trip between Aug. 4 and 7 during the annual ‘‘Hot August Nights’? bash. It’s great fun, especially if you’re nostalgic over the 1950s. For four days, everyone hauls out their poodle skirts, rolled jeans and saddle shoes and dances at various parks to many of the orig- inal rock groups. On “Prom Night’’, held at the massive Lawlor centre it’s white sports coats, pink carnations and net formals — strapless, mostly, and out to there with crinolines. 1 called the toll-free number: {- 800-367-7366 and was told that the tickets are $15.50, and there are still plenty available. Unfortunately, they can't reserve for you — you must call (toll) direct to the Lawlor Centre — 702-784-4444. Accommodation might be a probiem with thousands of extra visitors arriving so if you think you might want to be there, better get cracking and book now. Last year I stayed at Bally’s Reno during this event and it wasn’t a bad choice because a lot of the festivities were held in their parking lot. The. antique car parade started there as well. However, prices at hotels such as Circus-Circus are a whole lot cheaper and you’re much closer to the real action — a chance to boost the Nevada economy. .Back to the “‘costume party” ‘atmosphere, you'll enjoy the whole thing a Jot more if you participate. I got dragged out to the prom last year and felt like an idiot — the only person in the place in 1987 clothes. set Have you got a whole lot of money and 47 days to spare? I hesitate to recommend cruises that I haven’t taken myself, but since this-sort of cruise package isn’t offered very often, I’d be very tempted — if I were rich. The Chandris Line’s ship, Britanis, sails on Sept.30 from Miami to circle South - America, stopping at every imaginable port, including a four-day stay at Callao so that passengers can visit Machu Picchu. I’ve cruised the east coast of South America and around Cape Horm. What an experience, Cruising is virtually the only way a tourist will get to visit places like Puerto Madryn — in fact, it’s the only way a tourist would want to visit. The hotels didn’t strike me as inviting. The cost? These prices include return air- fare but optional excursions such as the one to Machu Picchu are never included and can be pricey. Since the (ompany offering this package (The Cruise People, Ltd.} is based in Scarborough, Ont. I called the B.C. Government Travel Service — the Consumer Affairs people — and was told that since the company isn’t protected under B.C. law that no one should book independently. In other words, book through a local travel agent or don’t book at all. Tour companies have been known to go belly-up, and our in- surance fund covers only bookings made through B.C. companies. However, the Cruise People ac- cept collect calls (416) 759-6606 so if you’re interested, give them a call and have them mail you the brochures. ; aae Sometimes I wish that I still had the problem of what to do with kids during the summer vacations. Most of the time, though, I regain my sanity and am perfectly happy that keeping three kids busy for two months is no longer my job. I found that taking them on the occasional all-day excursion broke the ntonotony of having them in and out of the house all day, demanding popsicles, In fact, I was always desperately searching for some new place to go — you can only visit the Game § Farm or Stanley park so often be- fore the kids start hiding on you. 1 just received a brochure from a Nanaimo firm, Bastion City Wildlife Cruises, that might solve at least one day of the summer. These cruises depart from their dock just below the Bastion at 1:30 travel wise Barbara McCreadie p.m. every day. For three hours they cruise the coastline, visiting a seal colony, tidal rapids and bird refuges. The whole trip is narrated. Coffee, fruit and homemade pastry are served. The cruise is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, children under 15, $10; under four, free. By timing your arrival in Nanaimo before noon you can also take in the daily costumed chang- ing of the guard at the Bastion {summer only).
