DETROIT (UPI) - ‘The chairman of the nation’s largest stecl-making com- pany said Monday two Japanese automakers may be dumping cars in the United States — selling them below the home market price. David M. Roderick, Chairman of United States Steel Corp., said a survey comparing wholesale prices in eight U.S. cities and in _ Tokyo indicated a dumping margin of between 14 per cent and 20 per cent. ‘“‘In other words, Americans buy Japanese vehicles for 14 to 20 per cent less than the Japanese do,” Roderick told a news conference. He described the alleged pricing policy as “predatory.” A spokesman for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. flatly denied the charge. accused of dumping “Toyota is not dumping,” the spokesman said. “Any (price) differences would have to be in the makeup of the car. If they were identical, they would be identical in wholesale price.” The spokesman said the U.S. Treasury Department cleared Toyota, Datsun and Honda of dumping charges in 1975. A spokesman for Nissan U.S.A., importers of Datsun vehicles, also denied dumping is taking place, and said dealer prices often are higher in this country than in Japan. At least one leading U.S. auto executive — American Motors Corp. President W. Paul Tippett — has publicly expressed suspicions recently that Japanese car prices are lower in the United States than in Japan. Roderick said the “very preliminary data” gleaned from the price survey he ordered indicated a pattern of dumping that should be investigated further. “Out of curiosity I decided to conduct a little survey,” he said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Detroit Economic Club. “We did some comparison shopping for some of the most popular Japanese automobiles sold here and in Japan.” He said the survey showed Toyota sells its 1800 SE _ Liftback in Japan at around $4,800, while the same car is exported to the U.S. at around $4 ;000. “The Toyota Corolla 1800 SR Coupe — identified as the SR-5 Sport Coupe in the United States — showed a dumping margin of nearly $000, or a 14 per cent margin,” he said. THE CHAIN DRIVEN cars lasted until 1914. This Simplex was the very last of this type of auto manufactured in the United States. (Courtesy Craven Foundation) Herman Broesel formed the Simplex Automobile Company in 1907, from the old concern of Smith & Mabley. The new firm's best- known model was the 50 hp, a massive chain-driven car with a 676 ci 4-cylinder T- head. Chassis pmce was $4,500, and bodies were made under contract’ by Quimby, Demarest. Holbrook and Brewster In 1908, a stnpped version won the 24 hour race at Bnghton Beach, New York, setting a world’s record olf 1.117 miles. Many famous dnvers drove for Simplex throughout the years, in- cluding George Robertson, Al Poole and Joe Tracy. The cars were designed by Edward Franquist,. who introduced a 38 hp 485 ci shaft-dnve model in 1911, and a 75 hp 597 ci chain- drive roadster the following year By 1914, this was the only such model in the Simplex line, and was said to be the last chain-driven American car. Some such JUNK CAR PICK-UP LIVINGSTON’S 24 HOUR The last of the chain driven autos models had a_ sharply- pointed V-radiator, though most used a flat Mercedes type unit. The 1914 models were 4 cylinders, in 38, 50 and 75 hp, plus a 5O hp six, but at years end a radical new model appeared. This was the 46 hp L-head Model 5. the work of Henry M. Crane. who had replaced Franquist as cmef designer The new car was a quality machine with Brewster coachwork, but it lacked the sporting qualities of previous models. It lasted until 1917; and bodies were still being fitted to Crane chassis in 1921. A’ re-organized company, the Crane- Simplex Company of New York, made a few cars in 1923 and 1924, then ceased production altogether.
