They'll give practical pointers at an all-day seminar October 31 on how to take action before, during and after an earthquake to cut down on injury and property loss. The Saturday seminar, co-spon- sored by the UBC Centre for Con- tinuing Education and emergency planning branches of federal, pro- vincial and municipal governments is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Lecture Hall 2, Woodward Building, 2194 Health Sciences Mall, UBC. “A giant earthquake must be expected in this area, but of course we don’t know when,’’ says Dieter “Weichert of the Pacific Geoscience Centre, who will provide scientific background at the seminar, He points out that the recent ios Angeles earthquake, 6.1 on the Richter scale, was of far less magnitude and affected a much | smaller area than B.C’s 1946 ear- thquake, which had its epicentre on Vancouver Island and shook the Richter scale at 7.3. Speakers will describe: 2 What to expect at the time of the quake; ® The emergency services that will be mobilized and how to get help; © High-risk locations in the Lower Mainland; © Tsunami (seismic ocean wave) warnings and how to take evasive action; e Emergency supplies that every household should keep on hand. Films will be shown at the semi- nar and printed guidelines for householders will be handed out. Speakers include William Rapatz, department of fisheries and oceans; Dr. Sheldon Cherry, professor of civil engineering, UBC; Larry Pearce, Emergency Preparedness Canada; Frank Clegg, provincial emergency pro- gram; Mel Blaney, director of emergency planning for Van- couver; Vancouver Police Chief Bob Stewart; and Vancouver Fire Chief Dan Pamplin. Admission to earthquake preparedness seminar is $20 and pre-registration is advisable.
