Vancouver welcomes beauties

WINNERS OF beauty contests in
communities from across North
America arrived in Vancouver on
Saturday to compete for the titles
of Miss North America Canada
and Miss North America U.S.A.

The winner of the Miss North
America Canada contest attends
the Miss Asia Pacific Quest in
Hong Kong and Miss North
America U.S.A. enters the Miss
Wonderland International in
Japan.

The Miss Asia Pacific Quest is
an international event which
honors the exceptional woman of
today who is the epitome of beau-
ty, poise, good character and per-
sonality.

It brings together the most
beautiful women from various
parts of the globe not only to
showcase and appreciate their
special qualities, but also to pro-
mote world peace and understan-
ding among people.

Among the contestants seeking
the crowns are: Elidie Strouse, La
Jolla, California; Heather Hart,
Montreal; Christine Kaldy, St.
Catherines; Shawna Campbell,
Edmonton; Belinda Bose, Calgary;
Lisa Moerke, Hope; Valeric Kettle,
New Westminster; Allyson Phelan,
a former Miss Teen Vancouver,
representing North Vancouver;
Trina Chavarria, from Sharon
Dorais School; Suzanne Williams,
West Vancouver; and Carmen
Espejo, Miss Pacific Northwest.
Several American applications are
en route.

Vancouverites will be sure to
notice these beautiful women as
they aprear about town along with
their volunteer chaperones on a
special tour arranged by Tourism
B.C. Their schedule includes
Grouse Mountain, the Capilano
Suspension Bridge, and visits to
Gastown, Chinatown and Queen
Elizabeth Park.

rehearsals for the grand finale and
final judging to be held Thursday,
August 20, at a dinner-dance in the
Hyatt Regency Ballroom.
