Band member Michael Billy, 23, will be paddling his hand-made one-, two- and six-man red cedar canoes in the races, which are now an annual event for the local band. Using what he calls ‘‘a tradi- tional chainsaw,’’ the young craft- sman first cuts the tree down then fashions it with a slight bend to make it turn easier. A one-man canoe has a bend of about two or three inches, an 11- man canoe, which Billy is also making, has a bend of about six inches. By the time his 11-man canoe is finished in about six weeks, Billy estimates he will have invested close to four months of full-time work in the project. Using a blend of traditional methods and contemporary tools, the craftsman has been working since the spring of 1984 on fash- ioning a series of nine canoes. About 15 11-man canoes are ex- pected to participate in this weckend’s races off Ambleside Park. More are expected to join prior to the race. *‘Everyone along the coast has expressed interest in coming to the races,” said band member Penny Billy. The weekend races will include one-man, two-man, six-man, II- man, mixed doubles and youth canoe categories. “We're looking at haying one a year,’’ Penny Billy said. “We want to keep our culture alive.” Classifieds Sell 986-6222 MID SUMMER MADNESS SAILBOARD SALE ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT Used Sailboards Complete BIC 250 Sailboard Demo BIC 250 Sailboard New Alpha 230 Sailboard Demo BIC 210 S Demo BIC 210 S Sailboard 6.0 Sail BIC 350 Sailboard BIC Hard Rock BIC Rock 'N Roll A PACKAGES BIC 250 Sailboard Complete BIC 210 S Sailboard Complete Farmer John Wetsuit Complete Wetsuit (John & Lifejacket and T-Shirt $599 = Jacket) Harness/Lifejacket & T-Shirt HiFiy Superfun Sailboard 5999 Complete Speed Seat Harness - Harness Ropes Mast Pad and T-Shirt $1499 Watsuit Shorties ¥: price *75.° Wetsuit FarmerJotns °99,"" Complete Wetsuit +149, Largest Wetsuit Selection in British Cotumbia : NORTH SHORE SAILBOARD SWAP & SHOP Located — ‘‘North Shore Ski Swap” 987-7245 Open 7 days a week 1625 Lonsdale, N.
