Making
Your Batteries
Last Longer!

Your batteries will last far longer
and be a lot safer to use if you take
a few common-sense precautions.
Here's some advice from experts at
the Duracell Company:

¢ Keep battery contact surfaces and
battery compartment contacts clean
by rubbing them with a clean pencil
eraser or a rough cloth each time you
replace batteries.

¢ Remove batteries from a device
when it won't be in use for several
months, Batteries should be remov-
ed from equipment while it is being
powered by household (AC) current.
* Don't carry batteries loose in your
pocket or purse. They can be
shorted by contact with metal
objects,

© Always replace batteries with the
size and type of battery specified by
the equipment manufacturer.

* Follow instructions on your equip-
ment regarding proper insertion of
batteries, making sure that the
positive (+) and negative (—) ter-
minals of each battery are aligned
property. Incorrect insertion of bat-
teries will cause power loss. If multi-
ple batteries are required, incorrect
insertion can cause leakage, rupture,
and possible damage to the
equipment.

¢ Remove worn-out batteries from
equipment immediately to prevent
possible damage from battery
leakage. Always replace all batteries
at the same time. Mixing old and
new battery sytems, such as alkaline
with zine-carbon types, will reduce
overall performance and, on rare oc-
casions, could cause leakage or
rupture. :

© Heat reduces battery life. Avoid
battery-powered equipment in very
warm places. If equipment must be
used or stored in high temperature
areas, then always use alkaline or
rechargeable batteries. They retain
power longer. and perform better
than zinc-carbon batteries under the
sanie kind of conditions.

* Keep extra batteries on hand.
Store them in a dry place at normal
room temperature. Refrigeration of
batteries is not necessary. Alkaline
batteries are ideal for storage since
they retain their power longer than
zinc-carbon batteries. Tests reveal
that alkalines stored for two years
at 72°F retained an average of 93
percent of their original power.

¢ Do not attempt to recharge a bat-
tery unless it is specifically marked
rechargeable". Recharging a non-
rechargeable may cause it to rup-
ture.

» Never dispose of batteries in fire.
They may explode.

¢ Never drill or saw a battery mere-
ty to see what's inside. An explosion
or release of chemicals could occur.
