Instead, she, should give ‘‘leadership’’. If Collins is against the death penalty, went this reasoning, she should tell the 70 per cent of the | voters who are for it to go blow while she marches with the 30 per cent who are against it. The editorial even went to the ghost of Cicero for support, he having said: “‘It is the duty of the nobles to oppose the fickleness of the “f multitudes.” It.is clear that the fifth colum- nist of whom I speak has not read my infallible arguments in this matter. If he had, he would havé seen the error of his ways. (It is, of course, always possible that he is'a she, things bzing what they are these days...) “Leadership’’, or what passes B for leadership in poor drifting ‘Wimpland is what has brought us to our present sorry pass. It is why half of the people don’t know for whom to vote, they believing, } rightly, that the MPs of all parties are: demented., It’s because of ‘leadership,’ for instance, that we are much more hostile’ to ‘| South Africa than even the Rus- { sians are. There are too many situa- tions in which MPs have to make up their minds quickly. In 1939, they had to decide in a hurry whether to declare war. Which brings up a point: would anyone say that Rene Levesque should have attempted to lead Quebec out of confederation without testing public opinion? If | he is consistent, that is what our editorialist would argue, for that would be “‘leadership’’, would it not? There are many thiugs that scream for referendums in this country.
