Reader describes UBC Collins-! Wear Editor: Regarding who won the Collins-Rankin debate. In the Vancouver area anly a dullard would not take at least a passing interest in a debate between the bulldog that walks like a man Doug Collins and the Harry and Red Rankin. Both being locally famous or infamous take your pick. Fortunate to have free time | looked on the event with the excitement and anticipation two well-matehed boxers promise. The pre-debate tension and over- whelming atmosphere from the stage that the debators genuinely disliked each other was very similar to main event boxing, Both came out nasty and tenacious — those who are familiar with both debators could hardly expect anything else. Each hurtling verbal barrages and broadsides, the target topic South African sanctions hardly was touched and scathed. It was when Rankin in the heat of battle changed his tactics to aim a personal broadside at Collins that this tactic would lead him on to falter. In the passion of debate and argument which these two can generate I do not think Rankin realized his crucial and Both Hunter, Dear Editor: Call Barb Regarding Bob Hunter's article of Jan. 30 relating to the Royal family and to millions of us who, by his definition, are walking around with holes in our heads lyan Valley Women’s Athletic Club Softball Registration at Lynn Valley Centre eb. 21, 10 am-3 pm Collins blasted Soot Feo 22. 12 noon- 3 pm $25” Registration Fee ankin debate dramatic tactical change. Rankin said. ‘it wits Nazis like Collins why the world was in such bad shape." f had to jeer at Rankin for this statement for [am sure the Nazis did not put Collins in a prisoner of war camp for being a Nazi. Rankin has no glass jaw when it comes to verbal combat but bis jaw started to drop. [ believe his jaw dropped because after the second jeer Rankin sensed the audience was going against his favor. Instead of trying to turn the audience around quickly and take the initiative Rankin became a bit sullen. Rankin then pleaded his old stand-by statistics. When this minor strategy failed he astonishingly call- ed the audience in general a bunch of baboons. From then on it was Collins finishing his victory. At the end of the debate it was approximately two-thirds Collins and one-third Rankin. In boxing, some main events go ten rounds, some fifteen. If this debate had gone longer Collins would have given Rankin the ver- bal knock-out, for Rankin continued to insult the au- dience, Barry Wray Vancouver CORRECTION NOTICE The dates shown on the Lonsdale’s Restaurant advertisement February 18 were incorrect. f Indonesian Bulfet Lunch Specials are offered every Friday. 987-0553 On the North Shore since 1955, COMBINED _PARTS & SERVICE because of our fascination of the Royal family. I just can't believe that you as editor continue to publish such trash from the mouths of Collins and Hunter who set themselves up as little demi-gods in their way of speaking what’s best for we ig- norant masses on the streets. I can honestly state both Collins and his co-partner Hunter remind me Of the little caring mother wat- ching her son in his first military parade, telling everyone, ‘‘Look there’s my David, he’s the only one in step.”’ So please Mr. Editor, let us have some decent reporting and enough of garbage like this. George Sykes North Vancouver Hunter should check facts Dear Editor: With regard to Bob Hunter’s ar- ticle of Jan. 30 about the Royal family. I do not wish to debate the pros and cons, undoubtedly others will do that. But, wasn’t there a court case in Toronto recently, about writing and distribution of mis- leading statements? To paraphrase part of Bob’s ar- ticle: Royalty hasn’t been dumb enough to play a front-and-centre battlefield role since the Hundred Years’ War. Check your facts, Bob! You don’t need to go back 400 or 500 years, just to the 1940s, Go sic him Doug!
