44 - Sunday, | Scholarship! recognizes | _ top ‘students FORMER friends and colleagues of North Vancouver District’s first Superintendent, W.E. (Bill) Lucas, have announced the formation of the W.E. Lucas Memorial Schol- arship. The scholarship is intended to honor the memory of Mr. Lucas who died in 1985, and is intended to recognize the outstanding achievement of North Vancouver students, as measured by their contribution to the community, and their individual merits. Inspector of Schools for North and West Vancouver since 1954, later to become the first Superin- tendent for North Vancouver, Mr. Lucas oversaw the expansion of W.E. LUCAS the District from 13 schools and 6,931 students in 1954, to 44 schools and 21,773 students when he retired in 1974. QUALITY EDUCATION ‘“‘There was a sense among many in this community that the name of Bill Lucas should be preserved in North Vancouver education, so that it can continue to represent the quality education which he ini- tiated in this District,’’ commented Dorothy Lynas, Trustee in North Vancouver for 16 of the 20 years that Mr. Lucas served as its top administrator. “*His commitment to quality, his spirit as an innovator, and his re- markable leadership qualities were an inspiration to all of us who knew him,”’ added William From- son, assistant to Bill Lucas during his tenure, and chairman of the W.E. Scholarship guidelines: © The student must have made a significant contribution to others and must have enriched the life of the school and/or the community. © The student must have given evidence of initiative and achieve- ment. Such initiative and achieve- ment can also be demonstrated by the student's having overcome some significant obstacle and hav- ing made progress well beyond what might have been predicted. CANDIDATES It is the objective of the scholar- ship fund to finance one or more scholarships worth $2,000 each to be distributed to worthy North Vancouver candidates every year. Contributions to the scholarship fund can be made directly at any branch of the North Shore Com- munity Credit Union. Funds can also be sent by che- que to the W.E.
