8 - Friday, Ogfober 11,.1985 - North Shore News Fighting for political purity SO THERE is to be a new socialist party in North Vancouver City, one that blushes under the title of Community Electors Association. Its founder is none other ‘than Bill Bell, well known to North Shore News students of school affairs. And peep- ing out from behind him we see other fighters for politi- cal purity. Donna Stewart, for in- stance, a wheel in the North Shore Women’s Centre and one of my most fervent ad- mirers; plus Barbara Sharp, Trudy Galpin and Bob Davis, a trio unknown to me and possibly to everyone else. When the news broke that this dim new comet was in the local sky, it reminded me that local politcal parties all too frequently hide their light under a bushel, so that new residents have to spend years figuring out what they stand for. What did the North Shore’s late NoVVA stand for, a puzzled newcomer might have asked? And TAGG!? Was it something to do with wrestling? How about the Burnaby Voters Association, and did Bur- naby voters really need an association? Is COPE some kind of tool? JET get this straight by Doug Collins Sa: It is disappointing that the Community Electors Association fights shy of announcing its aims in its name. After all, socialists and other heavy breathers for change are usually eager to sound their trumpets as It's Canadian way From Page 4 *: Nope. It’s: the Canadian way, after. all. And. that’s just live in industrial society. Maybe it’s . revenge. . for Mommy and Daddy having sent us off to school in the first place, instead of letting us stay at home, where we knew we belonged. Sure, we are all freer than ever. We can cope with filial responsibilities and obliga- tions by throwing money at them. But there is a little bit less love in our world, for all that. _ 750. MOVIES. The CEA could have call- ed itself the Socialist Ad- vance Party, or SAP. All saps would then have been alerted. As it is, the whispered word and the cupped hand must convey the message, and mystery is compounded by Bell’s claim that the CEA isn't a political party at ail. It is an ‘‘amalgamation of basically progressive peo- ple...”’ who feel that the present North Van City council lacks ‘‘far-sighted vision’. Hardly the kind of stuff likely to bring saps to the barricades in any numbers, if you ask me. ort While we're on the subject of advances on the socialist front let's take a look at what is happening in the jol- ly old Vancouver City Sav- ings Credit Union. it was captured some moons ago by Bob Williams, Darlene Marzari and David Levi. Williams, you may recall, is the guy who wanted to na- tionalize MacMillan Bloedel; Levi is the son of Norman, the health minister in the NDP government who sported that nine-foot desk, and Marzari, a COPER at heart. When the Vancity elec- tions took place, you couldn’t tell from the blurbs what any of them stood for. Left-wingers and right- wingers alike all stood for good things. It was even worse than the NoVVA, BVA and CEA stuff. Shortly after the forces of furtivism took over, Vanci- ‘ty’s membership in the Fraser Institute went out the window. And now the credit union plans to dump in- vestments in companies hav- ing anything to do with South Africa and weapons industries. , That doesn’t suit Pro- UBC, who is organizing @ resistance movement. It doesn't suit me, either. | have no objection at all to being Merchant of Death, provided the money’s good. And it is the responsibility of Vancity to get what it can for its members, not run around bleating about puri- ty. ‘ Cohn points out that Williams and Co. have no objections to firms doing business with the USSR, the human human rights record of which is far worse than South Africa’s.
