Rads are cooling off the market CHANGES IN radiator repair methods have caught up with the technology and, for motorists, the savings could be significant. The change in the way radiators are built stems from the fuel crisis of the mid-70s when the combined drive for fuel economy and cheaper cars saw the old copper and brass radiators replaced with plastic-shelled, aluminum-cored radiators. “The problem,’’ says John Lockwood of Nor-Est Radiaters, ‘‘was with repairs. The people who designed the new radiators were obviously not concern- ed about repairing damage." As an example of what that meant, savs Lockwood, the owner of a BMW who came in with a rock-damag- ed radiator was facing a bill for $950 for replacement of the whole unit. The problem was over- come through a concerted effort in the repair industry to develop the necessary repair techniques. Now, Lockwood says, the same BMW owner suffering minor radiator damage can have it repaired for between $50 and $60. More important than the repairability of radiators, Lockwood adds, is. that motorists have to be more aware than ever that regular maintenance is needed to Keep the new units function- ing well, “We recommend that motorists have their radiators flushed regularty and that only the correct coolant and anti-freezes be used,” he says. The results of the regular maintenance could be major -— not only in savings of car repair dollars but in terms of making sure you don't wind up stranded alongside the highway due to over-heating.
