= C6 - Wednesday, February 1, 1984 - North Shore News GS travel ea) A FEW WEEKS Ago, 11 I lost a letter from a | reader but, asking forgiveness for my carelessness, at- tempted to answer what questions I could remember. Just received the following: DEAR BARBARA: 1 forgive you and I’m writing again with regards to your article today. One of the most important questions we have is: When we get to our destination and it’s time to hop a cab or rent a car, do you know anything about . provisions for car seats in Hawaii for one or two toddlers? Also: Do the condos or hotels provide cribs, high chairs, laundry facilities? The last question we have is, in all your vast experience in travelling to Hawaii, do you know of an accommoda- tion which caters more to the family, which is near shops, beach, etc.? ANSWER: 1 took a survey of the ma- jor car rental agencies about toddler seats and here’s the results: TILDEN: Yes, they have seats. The charge is $2 daily, or $10 weekly. They require a $60 deposit. HERTZ: Seats available for children under three. They charge the same but require no deposit. Can confirm given 48 hours notice. DOLLAR: No seats. BUDGET: Yes, but they cost a flat $3.65 a day and you can only confirm them on arrival. AVIS; Yes and charges are the same as Hertz or Tilden, but no deposit is required. They, too, can confirm on 48 hours notice. RENT-A-WRECK: No _in- formation available as the Hawaii company isn’t con- nected with the local franchise. As for cabs, it’s highly unlikely that they have seats, especially for two toddlers. If you decide to use cabs, better travel- “McCreadie bring along your seats from home. The airlines will ship them free as a second piece of baggage, the same as they do with sports equipment. Most condos hav- cribs. The problem here is that many of the cribs aren't what I'd consider safe for an active toddler. It’s the slats (too widely spaced) and the space between the mattress and sides that causes the problems. However, if your kids are anything like mine were, they could chmb out of anything AYLORMOTIVE OUR 24TH YEAR PROFESSIONALLY SERVICING 10°S OF THOUSANDS OF SATISFIED CUSTOMERS YOUR COMPLETE B.C.A.A. I also put locks on their windows and doors and child-proofed their bedrooms. Another possibility is the use of restraint harnesses in the cribs but I hate the things. If you don’t like the looks of the cribs provided, either consider renting your own from an outside agency or ask for a roll-away cot and child-proof the room. That means locking cosmetics and medicines in a suitcase and using kiddie covers on door- knobs. Use the safety catch on sliding doors and sleep lightly! High chairs are available in most family units in condos but rarely in hotels, outside of the coffee shops and restaurants. Write ahead, re- questing all the facilities you require. Probably the manager can arrange with a private rental company if the condo doesn’t have the high- chairs. As for family style condos, most are geared for families. The key is often the price - those luxury units renting for $150 a day are apt to be adult oriented, while the middle price range is chosen by families. If you have a car, being close to shops isn’t that im- portant. We generally stay at the Kaanapali end of Maui which is about seven miles from Lahaina. You can walk to Whaler’s Village but not lugging a toddler or pushing a stroller. Some condos have washers and dryers included right in- side the unit. Others have laundry rooms for every floor (or every other floor). If you’re going to rent a very modest unit you may find you'll have to drive to the nearest laundromat but there are lots of these. The rental agent you choose should have - a complete run-down of all the facilities. The outer islands are far more family-oriented than Honolulu. When we visited Waikiki with the kids (and once was enough for them!) the only reasonably-priced condo we could find was on the canal, blocks from Waikiki. We used our car a lot but the traffic is bad and parking is worse! We drove to a lot of out-of-town beaches but found it incon- venient with regards to washrooms, lunches and so on. It was far better to rent a condo right on the beach in Maui where the kids could eat when they liked, shower off the sand by the back door and we didn’t have to load up WAIKIKI) $359. Agest 157-3 the car with a ton of gear. With two toddlers, 1 doubt if you’ll have much use for nightclubs - which is the only, reason | can think of to visit Honolulu. That’ and shopping. One thing you didn’t ask about but I'll add: babysit- ting. When our girls were younger they’d often make a lot of money babysitting for other tenants in our condo. The tenants preferred our daughters because they knew ~~ we were close by in emergen- cies and they charged less than the elderly adults that the condos provided. Since our girls were all good swim- mers, they were often hired for a few hours in the daytime to supervise small children in the paddling pool or to take them for a walk. You might check the bulletin board at the condo or talk to any families you meet. - NOW AVAILABLE and exclusive to Co-Ordinated Kitchens! ..a gorgeous, yet superbly functional line of all-new “Designers Choice” cabinetry - in a whole new range of exciting colours!
