CS - Wednesday, October 5, 1983 - North Shore News SS crave! | (Su) | DON’T STYLES in luggage change quickly? Buy- ing luggage for ‘‘style’’ is an exercise in futility since most of us use the same bags forever, relying on repair shops when the catches break or, if beyond repair, a wide strap to hold the poor thing together. At one time, baggage was the traditional gift to graduating high school students, a not-so-subtle hint that Mom and Dad would like them to get moving. When | graduated, the family presented me with a three piece set of sturdy leather bags. Trouble was, | didn’t have three arms and each of those bags, fully loaded, was a hefty proposition for a full- back rather than a 100-pound girl. 1 soon developed a fine working relationship with porters all over Western Canada, especially when my gear also included a portable typewriter, a sewing machine and a record player - stan- dard equipment for the travelling student. Before my first European jaunt, I decided that I needed one BIG bag to take over the job but couldn’1 afford both the trip and the case. I was one of my first purchases before the next trip. Unfor- tunately, I did everything wrong when | bought it. First, it was much too big. I'd learned a bit about leav- ing things at home but found myself packing more than | needed just to keep everything from sliding around. | chose a fairly light plastic soft-sider. Problem was that it was so light that it compacted everything inside when everyone elses’ bags were piled on top. Thus, it compacted my hair dryer into two pieces, crushed a tube of toothpaste smoothly into my makeup bag and made my shoes difficult to get my feet into. The next problem was ils “Zipper which had a voracious appetite for clothing, especially when | had five minutes before the departure of the airport bus. As with any other bargain. priced pur- chase, 1 should have looked for the flaw. In most zip- pered bags, the makers install a plastic guard to keep things out of the teeth None here The size of a suttcase has to be geared to the owner's height If a bag ts too high, a short person doesn’t have cnough clearance to step up an average flight: of stairs without the bag dragging. But, even if it had a set of wheels it likely wouldn’t have pulled properly. The shape of a bag is important for wheels to work. Short, stubby bags pull well. Tall, narrow bags tip over every few § feet, especially around corners. My next bag was one of the first sold with wheels attach- ed. It’s been a Godsend - smooth to pull, ample in size but short enough to clear stairs. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever and the frame has bent making it unstable. I’m inthe market for a new bag but I’m not setthng for anything but the best - not necessarily the highest price. Detachable wheels are the ‘in’ thing now, with the argument that auline con- veyor belts can damage or be damaged by the attached SINGING’ is what you will be doing, rather than soaking your teet! IN THE RAIN... in black & beige in kind. Well, I'll take my chances with the old style. Two of my kids have bags with detachable wheels and they’ve been a nuisance from the start (the wheels, that is). The rule is that if you get three wheels removed for a flight the fourth one jams. Or, when crossing a _ busy intersection, pulling the bag, the fourth wheel remembers what it was supposed to doa few hours earlier and parts company, rolling § merrily along by itself until it comes to rest under a taxi. If you manage to get all four wheels removed, where do you put them? Purse? No, room. Pocket? Too bulky. Satchel? Last choice. Why is it that eight wheels go in and only seven come out? My last bag was a nastycol- or - burnt orange with a peb- bled finish. Never again! Although it was easy to spot on a carousel I was almost ashamed to claim it. My next bag will be a tweed fabric finish, personalized with bright tape. Every airline has donated a. smear of thick black grease to some part of my bag. I’m sure the tweed bag will get just as many but at least they won't show so badly. That stuff won’t budge with scour- ing powder but you ought to see how fast it comes off on white slacks.
