School Trustees Association has welcomed news that the Sager Commis- sion, Charged with in- vestigating school district administrative costs, has been terminated by Educa- tion Minister Jack Heinrich. West Vancouver's Mark Sager had been appointed by former education minister Bill Vander Zalm to report ways to cut costs. BCSTA President Joy Leach concurred with the new minister's assessment that this is not the me to ex- . pend additional funds on such commissions. “Certainly there is a need for school districts to par- ticipate in a comprehensive and continuing examination of education costs and effi- ciency,” said Leach, “and trustees are prepared to work with the ministry toward these ends. “Our concerns, however, are that the perimeters for determining administrative effectiveness be clearly established and studied, within a realistic time frame. in order to assure that the resulting recommendations are credible and = accep- table.” Leach also referred to an announcement by Heinrich that the government intends to look into the potential for the amalgamation of some school districts. Advocates of cost-cutting on the North Shore have long maintained North and West Vancouver should amalgamate its school boards. “The BCSTA believes that there could be wisdom in changing some ad- SAGER...commission disbanded ministrative structures but it has also been our position that the objectives and the measurement criteria be clearly spelled out before any changes are proposed or implemented.” Leach said . “For example, it is con- ceivable that two small districts could function more effectively as one but there 1s also the possibility that some larger districts could func- tion better if split into smaller districts. “Our concern is that no one approach the amalgama- tion argument from the simplistic position that big- ger is better because there 1s no evidence to suggest that this is the case, either economically or in terms of the delivery of quality education at the local level. “We will be making representations to the ministry on this matter in the hope that any government decisions would be made on- ly after considering al! the options and potential pro- blems Boat burns out A SAILBOAT anchored at Deep Cove was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon Owner George Mathiasen was aboard when the fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. and was reported lo be very shaken but’ escaped unin- jured.
